Usually made from salt-cured pork belly that’s been sliced into thin strips to give it that distinct and recognizable look, bacon is easily one of the most popular breakfast staples of today, most especially in Western culture.
However, while it’s usually made from pork, there are other options available such as turkey, beef and even lamb.
Furthermore, it’s also usually sold as pre-cooked deli meat (such as ham). This opens the argument whether it’s safe to eat raw, or whether it needs a good round in the frying pan again.
So, can bacon be eaten raw? And should you do it?
First of all, it’s important to understand that eating any kind of uncooked meat increases the possibility to get yourself food poisoning because meat is usually inhabited by parasites, viruses and bacteria.
It’s not a small issue as well, since an estimated 48 million people each year get food poisoning, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. From these numbers, around 3,200 people die from it.
Of course, bacon itself is already treated and cured with additives, such as nitrites and salt. This makes it less likely to spoil and much safer to eat because the salt usually stops bacteria from growing. Processed meat such as bacon is also considered not healthy, with one study linking it to colorectal cancer.
Furthermore, eating raw bacon can still have its fair share of foodborne illnesses. This includes:
- Trichnosis – This can trigger vomiting, diarrhea, weakness and eye swelling. It is usually caused by a certain species of parasitic roundworms.
- Toxoplamosis – The parasite behind this condition is especially harmful to people with weakened immune systems.
- Tapeworms – One of the most common conditions, these parasitic worms can cause symptoms such as weight loss, internal blockages and abdominal pain by living in your intestines and disrupting your natural gut composition.
So, should you eat bacon raw?
You can, but you shouldn’t. Although usually pre-cooked, frying bacon into a crisp meal is still the best way to eat it, since doing so can kill any bacteria present in it. It’s also recommended that you limit your consumption of it.
