This is what a scared Donald Trump looks like.
President Trump reportedly called House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to beg her not to launch an impeachment inquiry and was frantically seeking ways to downplay the revelations that he sought to pressure Ukraine to join a smear campaign aimed at presidential rival Joe Biden.
“Can we work something out?” Trump asked his frenemy Pelosi in a failed attempt to strike a deal her Tuesday impeachment announcement, according to NBC News.
CNN reported that Trump thought he had successfully convinced Pelosi to hold off on impeachment and was “stunned” to see her dramatic press conference when he returned to Trump Tower after a day at the United Nations.
Although he has sometimes boasted that impeachment would help him win reelection, Trump admitted to friends that he does not want to be impeached, CNN reported.
The usually brash Trump also showed uncharacteristic weakness in reversing course and quickly agreeing to hand over to Congress a transcript or summary of his now-infamous phone call with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky and the complaint of an intelligence operative who blew the whistle on Trump’s alleged abuse of power.
The quick cave to Congress is a dramatic change from Trump’s unyielding stance toward any and all congressional demands, even when the law leaves no wiggle room.
Trump kept up a brave face on social media as the first hours of life under an impeachment inquiry played out.
He tweeted a shrill attack on Democrats and retweeted claims of Republican allies that “nothing has really changed” after Pelosi’s announcement.
There has been no President in the history of our Country who has been treated so badly as I have. The Democrats are frozen with hatred and fear. They get nothing done. This should never be allowed to happen to another President. Witch Hunt!95.7K6:24 AM – Sep 25, 2019Twitter Ads info and privacy59.1K people are talking about this
But even as the White House scrambled to control the damage from promised release of the transcript of the call and whistleblower complaint, Democrats were already making powerful new demands.
Democratic leaders called those documents just the start of a wide-ranging investigation that would potentially force Trump insiders to explain under oath what was actually behind the Ukraine push.
Rep. Adam Schiff pointed to Rudy Giuliani’s claims that the State Department directed him to carry out his freelance dirt-digging in Ukraine as evidence of the need to get to the bottom of the matter. As always with impeachment, the biggest question might be: “What did the president know and when did he know it.”
“We don’t need a transcript to tell us what the president has already admitted,” Schiff said Wednesday. “He has violated his oath of office.”
