The fifth-generation network is on its way to make a mark on our daily life. It is worth noting that 5G is not just an evolution from the 4G network (or 4G LTE), it’s a major paradigm shift. The average speed that we have with the 4G network is 25Mbps. It might sound a lot. But that is because we have not experienced 5G network speed. 5G average speed is going to be in the range of hundreds of megabits per second, more specifically 200-400 Mbps.

Latency is defined as the time it takes for the data packet to get from one designated point to another. In simple words, latency is the delay we experience when we request any data online. This is measures in milliseconds (ms).

With a 4G network, the latency stands at 20-50 ms. However, the 5G network will bring this down to 10 ms, and 1 ms in the best case.

In the case of a 5G network, it can reach up to 10 Gigabits per second (Gbit/s).

With this high, bandwidth, 5G will no longer just serve cell phones. It will serve our desktop and laptops as an internet service provider. This is not possible with a 4G network since they can reach only up to 30-250 megabits per second (Mbit/s) bandwidth.


Here, the 5G network is the clear winner since the 4G network cannot compete in this category. It is without any doubt that the 4G network was a much-improved version of its predecessor – 3G network. Yet, it was not good enough for industrial applications like autonomous or self-driving cars or IoT (Internet of Things) devices.

5G network brings confidence with it to be the driving force behind these industrial applications. With far higher bandwidth and much lower latency, the 5G network is the first true network that has the potential to support safety-critical industrial applications. Aside from personal use, the 5G network will prove to be the backbone of technologies like artificial intelligence, augmented reality, IoT, healthcare (remote surgery), automation, etc.


With such advantages over current network capability, 5G will result in productivity gains in industries. Even if the gains are in the range of 1-3%, it would result in millions of dollars of savings. Having said that, 5G will not be made available overnight. It has taken years for the 4G network to establish and spread across geographies. Even now, some rural areas have a 3G network. Given the benefits it holds over a 4G network, 5G network technology is certainly worth the wait.
